Visual examination of all welding and witness of NDT required by Specification

Dimensional check of important features e.g.

If the design incorporates shaft gland packing to ensure that these are in accordance with Specification, check shaft and keyway dimensions.

If the drive unit is not furnished with the fan then check the machined dimensions of the coupling and direction of rotation, which should be plainly marked.

If the fan is furnished complete with drive unit, then this unit must be fully inspected unless this has already been carried out at the driver's supplier works. Check that power requirements meet the Specification.

If the fan is fitted with a pressure lubrication system, then particular care must be taken to ensure cleanliness of the complete lubrication system.

Witness running test in accordance with detailed Specification, also the balancing of rotors at rated speeds and powers.

Check noise levels and obtain records.

Check cleaning and painting as required by Specification.

Check the maker's nameplate carried all required data.

Check field assembly markings and instructions.

2. Fans

Fans are normally employed when there is a requirement to move large volumes of air or gas at very low-pressure differentials. Typical uses are for ventilation work, cooling circuits, fume extraction, to provide draft to boilers and furnaces, air drying, cooling towers etc.
The "fan" definition is normally employed when the change in the gas specific weight between inlet and outlet is less than 7%. If this percentage is exceeded, then the equipment is normally classed as a compressor. Fans, therefore, are normally used in systems where a pressure-head of less than 0.5 psig is required. Fans may have straight, forward, or backward curving blades - axial flow fans may be of the hub-mounted propeller type or of disc with fitted blade construction.
Fan casings are generally constructed from comparatively lightweight steel plating, since little or no pressure containment is required - the principle requirement being to provide a rigid construction to reduce vibration and subsequent noise levels, so far as practicable. Fans are normally purchased complete with driver - usually electric motors although steam or gas turbines may be employed in larger units or when variable flow is required.
