Pantaerythrite Production Technology
Pentaerythrite, short form PER; molecular formula:
C(CH2OH)4molecular weight：136.15appearance：white crystal or white
powdermelting point：261～262℃boiling point：276℃relative
density：1.395g/cm3refractive index：1.548solubility： 1g can be
dissolved in 18ml water at 15℃. It is soluble in ethanol, glycol,
glycerine, and insoluble in acetone, benzene, ether, carbon
tetrachloride, and petroleum ether. It is stable in the air, not
easy to absorb moisture, non-toxic and with slightly sweet taste.
Production method： Acetaldehyde and formaldehyde have condensation
reaction, then reduced by hydrogen or formaldehyde has reaction at
strong base condition.
Section A Pentaerythrite Application
Pentaerythrite can be used for producing alkyd resin paint to
improve coat film hardness, luster and durability. It also used as
raw material for rosin ester, which is the raw material for making
colored painted varnish and the printing ink, etc. I also can be
used for making dry oil, fire retardant coat and lubrication oil.
Its fatty acids ester is effective lubricant and PVC plasticizer,
its epoxy derivatives are the raw material for surfactants. It also
used as softening agent for hard water. Besides, it also used in
medicine, and the pesticide.
Pentaerythrite has four equal methylol group with high symmetry,
therefore it is used for making multiple functions group compounds.
PETN is explosive and PETA is used for coating.
Section B Pentaerythrite Production Process
1.Comparison between continuous way and traditional batch way
In continuous way, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are main material.
Aldol condensation and Cannizzaro reaction are conducted separately
in two special reactors. At last, pure pentaerythrite is produced
with dipentaerythrite and sodium formate as byproduct after
crystalline separation. Compared with traditional bath way,
reaction condition can be efficiently controlled, useless byproduct
can be minimized in continuous way.
Meanwhile, in continuous way, because of smaller equipments, stable
energy consumptions , stable utilities consumptions, then
investment and maintenance cost are reduced. Moreover, higher
purity product can be received.
