Summary Report for
October 2005
- Israeli Security Forces assassinated Palestinian Luay Sa’adi, a top commander in Islamic Jihad. In an unrelated incident, two drive-by shootings in the West Bank killed two Israeli women and an Israeli youth, and wounded six others. PHRMG strongly condemns both drive-by shootings, and expresses firm disapproval of the extra-judicial assassination of Luay Sa’adi. The PHRMG reminds Israel of the delicate political situation in the territories, and calls on Israeli Security Forces to exercise restraint and the rule of law when confronting Palestinian faction leaders. In addition, the PHRMG demands that the PA investigate the drive-by shootings, and take immediate and sweeping measures to control the security situation in the Occupied Territories.
- Also in October, Islamic Jihad
member Hassan Abu Zaid,
age 19, carried out a suicide bombing in a Khadera
marketplace, which injured 55 and resulted in the deaths of five innocent
civilians. In retaliation, Israel began a series of steps toward the
violent escalation of the conflict. The PHRMG condemns Islamic Jihad for
its vulgar and infantile program of vengeance against Israeli citizens.
Additionally, the PHRMG warns Israel of responding to the attacks with
equally juvenile measures of revenge and military escalation, and
calls on both sides to continue diplomatic negotiations.
