Summary Report for December 2005

 

  • The situation in Gaza deteriorated to chaotic levels of infighting between PA groups and military factions. Gunfights between clans in Gaza resulted in the deaths of eleven Palestinians, including two PA policemen. Five foreign nationals were kidnapped by armed groups of militants, and a rash of missile fire into Israeli territory prompted the IDF to commence air raids in northern Gaza. Also, armed militants raided government offices in Gaza on 12/12, 13/12, 27/12, and 28/12.

 

  • Two separate attacks on IDF checkpoints left two soldiers dead. Lt. Uri Binamo (age 21) was killed along with a cab driver and two militants after stopping a suicide bomber en route to a bombing. Sgt. Nir Kahane (age 20) was stabbed to death at his post at Qalandia checkpoint.

 

  • A suicide bomber carried out an attack at Sharon Mall in Netanya which killed five and injured more than fifty people. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the bombing and the checkpoint explosion, and Israeli Defense Forces retaliated with the extra-judicial assassinations of six Islamic Jihad militants in Gaza and the West Bank.
