PRESS RELEASES

June 27, 2001: Vigil Announcement
Palestinian detainees have no chance for true justice against the Israeli military legal system.  Sunday 1 July 2001, 5 to 6 pm in front of the Russian Compound, Jerusalem

This is precisely why thousands of Israeli military orders, military courts and military judges still remain in place after 34 years of occupation. Israeli citizens are exempted from this system; for three million Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza Strip, this is the Israeli court of law.

The Military Orders authorize lengthy periods of interrogation (30 days renewable up to 90 days) or administrative detention (6 months renewable) during which Palestinian detainees are not charged, not tried, and do not know what evidence has been brought against them. Not even their lawyers have access to the “secret evidence” compiled by the General Security Services (GSS), in effect preventing them from preparing any sort of defense.

The Courts routinely accept the “secret evidence” presented to them by the GSS, and routinely extend detention periods according to their requests. Cooperation with the GSS is customary.

The Judges even close their eyes on evidence of torture and mistreatment to which Palestinian detainees are sometimes subjected. Justice bends to the principle of security. Human rights and international law hardly apply to Palestinians.

Palestinian human rights activist Abed al-Rahman al-Ahmar is going through this ordeal right here in the Russian Compound for more than 40 days. He is just one of the tens of thousands of Palestinians who has been interrogated and tortured in the Russian Compound. His detention has been continuously extended based on secret evidence, and he still does not receive proper medical attention even after the issue was put in front of the Israeli High Court. A new hearing should take place Sunday or Monday to extend once again his detention.

THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!

Will you remain silent?
