“A War of Words: Israeli and
Palestinian Media Coverage of the al-Aqsa Intifada” New
Report by PHRMG
This week, the PHRMG published its
latest report, “A War of Words: Israeli and Palestinian
Media Coverage of the al-Aqsa Intifada” in the November
issue of the Palestinian Human Rights Monitor. This report,
published with support from Search for Common Ground in the
Middle East, analyzes the Israeli and Palestinian print news
coverage of the first six months of the al-Aqsa intifada.
It focuses on news articles, and to a lesser degree on
editorials or analyses. This report examines Al-Ayyam,
al-Hayat al-Jadida, Al-Quds, AMIN (Arab Media Internet
Network), The Jerusalem Post, Ha’aretz, Ma’ariv and
Yediot Ahronot.
The report tackles issues including
media bias and incitement, finding these problems to be
prevalent in both the Israeli and the Palestinian press.
The report concludes that while the Palestinian media often
encourages outright violence and glorifies the perpetrators
of this violence, the Israeli media often uses more subtle
tactics of dehumanization and publishes the comments of
prominent individuals inciting violence. In another
disturbing trend, the Israeli media often publishes
statements and press releases issued by the Israeli military
spokesperson without confirming their validity or checking
with reliable sources. The report also cites selective
omission of facts to be a major problem on both sides.
