Urgent Appeal
Human Rights Activist Abed Rahman al-Ahmar
Six more months in Administrative Detention!
Yesterday, 14 November 2001, Yizhak Eitan, OC Central
Commander, ordered a new 6-month administrative detention
for PHRMG field researcher Abed Rahman al-Ahmar. He is to be
detained until 23 May 2002 without charges or trial. The
decision was just communicated to PCATI and PHRMG’s offices.
Appeals against Mr. Al-Ahmar detention were sent by
countless individuals, as well as by Israeli, Palestinian
and international organizations such as PCATI, PHRMG,
B’Tselem, Gush Shalom, Rabbis for Human Rights, al-Haq, the
Gaza Community Mental Health Program, Amnesty International,
Witness, Mumia Abu Jamal, etc. All are convinced that Mr.
Al-Ahmar’s administrative detention has no basis and want
the Israeli authorities to make a simple choice: bring him
for trial, or let him go. Yet the Israeli army and General
Security Services (GSS) have decided to resort again to
administrative detention, a measure that saves them from
having to present any evidence against Mr. Al-Ahmar.
PHRMG and PCATI are revolted by this decision. Mr. Al-Ahmar
just celebrated his 34th birthday in prison, he will now
also have to spend Ramadan away from his family.
