Although the
Israeli Supreme Court outlawed torture two years ago, have
no doubt that torture is continuing, most notable at the
infamous "Moscobiya" Russian Compound in
Jerusalem.
Just yesterday,
Palestinian detainee Abed al-Ahmar described to his attorney
how he was tortured that very day, vomiting, in terrible
pain, and showed her red marks on his wrists from tight
handcuffs. Mr. al-Ahmar is a human rights researcher at the
Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group and has been in
prison several times under administrative detention. One of
his interrogators just last week sarcastically told him:
"You will get a Ph.D. in interrogation." Another
ensured him that "The solution is that all the
Palestinians leave." His last time in prison, until
'98, left him with a hernia and back problems because of the
torture, and in need of daily, strong medication. Then too
he was at the "Moscobiya". Mr. al-Ahmar is but one
example.
Know that since
the start of the Intifada there are even more arrests, which
means more interrogations and illegal detentions, and at the
same time greater silence among the public in its compliance
with Israeli violations of human rights. The Israeli
Security Services (Shabak) are very much aware of the lack
of opposition on the street to these human rights
violations, and even the increasing support for its illegal
policies.
Let them know
that we will not remain silent. This phenomenon, the norm
for those under decades of occupation, will continue and
even worsen as the months go by.
WEDNESDAY 13 JUNE
2001, 5 PM, IN FRONT OF THE RUSSIAN COMPOUND, AS THE
INTERROGATORS AND TORTURERS FINISH THEIR SHIFTS, WE WILL
STAND IN OPPOSITION, HOLDING SIGNS:
- THE SHABAK CONTINUES TO TORTURE
- NO TO ILLEGAL DETENTIONS
- YES TO DUE PROCESS, HUMANE
TREATMENT AND EQUAL RIGHTS
- WE WILL NOT REMAIN SILENT
