PRESS RELEASES 2000

Jerusalem, February 23, 2000

The PA closes al-Nawras (Sea Gull) TV station in Hebron

On 19.2.2000, al-Nawras TV station hosted Mr. Khaled al-Atrash, representative of the Palestinian teachers who are on strike, who spoke about their miserable conditions. He said that there were two options; either they would go out in the streets begging for money, or the PA would a) increase their salaries and b) cut down the deductions in their wages.

The following day, 20.2.2000, Ghazi al-Jabali, head of the Palestinian police ordered the closure of the station for one week, because it transmits incitement programs.

It is worth mentioning that al-Nawras TV was established by some young men who used to work for al-Majd (Fame) TV. Those men together with some figures affiliated with Fateh-the mainstream in the PLO, put their efforts together to start al-Nawras TV. But now that those Fateh people left the station, Jabali issued his order to close it, after it hosted Mr. Al-Atrash.
