Jerusalem, May

The Palestinian Authority
arrests a freelance correspondent for the London based
al-Shark al-Awsat .
Abdallah Issa, a freelance correspondent for the London
based Arabic daily al-Shark al-Awsat, was arrested by the
Palestinian General Intelligence Service on the 17th of
April.
General Amin al-Hindy, the Director General of the
Palestinian Intelligence Service, made the following
statements to al-Quds the 5th of May:
"Abdallah Issa was an Intelligence Service Officer who was
arrested for leaking harming information
General Amin al-Hindy, Director General of the Palestinian
Intelligence Service, explained that Abdallah Issa who has
been arrested by the Palestinian General Intelligence
Service since 18 days, was in fact an officer in that
service and received a monthly salary from them. To the
contrary his wife claimed, in announcements made to several
foreign newspapers that he worked as a correspondent to
al-Shark al-Awsat newspaper, which is published in London.
Al-Hindy added that the arrest of Issa came after he
contacted some newspapers abroad, and gave out information
that offended some Palestinian personalities, and harmed the
relationship with friendly states. This contradicted the
rules and regulations of the GIS, which prevent any employee
in the service to work as a correspondent, and leak
information to the press. He also added that the wife of
Abdallah Issa was not threatened or treated badly by the
GIS, as she claimed. He explained that there is no
Intelligence service in the world that accepts one of its
employees to work as a correspondent with newspapers, and
give out information to the press, therefore, it is strange
that some newspapers criticize the GIS for arresting Issa.
General Al-Hindy informed that Abdallah Issa will soon be
presented for trial."
