NEED FOR URGENT ACTION
Four staff-members of the Palestinian Human Rights
Monitoring Group (PHRMG) have received letters and phone
calls threathening them to resign from their work at the
organisation.
The letters were sent by mail to their private addresses.
The letters are signed by “Committees Fighting Corruption”,
unknown to us.The director of the PHRMG, Bassem Eid, or the
members of the Board of Directors did not receive letters or
phone calls. The staff was told to stop working until the
Board of Directors decide on further action at a meeting at
12.00 today (Wednesday).
The letters are defaming the organisation and the director,
Bassem Eid. Below find the English translation of one of the
letters which was sent – in Arabic - to the husband of a
laywer working for the PHRMG, who wrote our Annual Report
1999 that was released some weeks ago.
The PHRMG will not accept any threats made against the
organisation or the staff of the organisation. We preceive
these letters and phone calls as attempts to destroy our
work in the field by attacking our staff members, and we
reject outright the accusations made in the letters.
We ask your organisation to issue an urgent alert on behalf
of the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group.
