  PRESS RELEASES 1999

Jerusalem, December 02, 1999

PLC member who signed “Petition-20” shot

Mo’awiya Al-masri, one of the PLC members who signed the “Petition 20” criticizing Arafat’s regime of tyrrany, corruption and political deceit, was shot late last night coming home from the PLC meeting in Gaza.

Al Quds newspaper reports that as he left his car to walk to his house in Nablus he was attacked by three men in masks, with guns and axes. Al-masri was shot twice in his left leg. He was taken to Al Ittihad Hospital for treatment, and was released this morning.

Al-masri was one of the five PLC members who yesterday published a new statement confirming their earlier accusations of corruption and mismanagement in the Palestinian Authority.

Few hours after the incident, Al Tayeb Abdul Rahim, the secretary general of the PA cabinet announced that President Arafat showed great concern in what happened to Al-masri in Nablus. Arafat issued his instructions to general Ghazi Al Jabali, head of the police, to investigate into the incident and the necessity to catch the offenders.

Abdul Rahim added that this incident comes in an attempt to stir internal disputes, which will be dealt with firmly by the Authority. Al-masri himself said late last night to Al-Jazeera TV that no nationalistic individualists would commit this attack.

The Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group (PHRMG) calls for the Palestinian Authority to take all measures to protect the legislators who signed this legal petition from violence and threats on their life.

We fear for the lives of Palestinian citizens who dear to speak freely on political issues concerning the Palestinian Authority, and once again we call upon the international donor community to put pressure on the PA to end these severe violations of basic human rights for the Palestinian people.
