Another Death in Gaza

Yesterday, 6/9/1998, at around 11 in the morning, Hussein Abed Abu Ghali (55, from Khan Yunis refugee camp, married and father of 10 children), went to Abu Khadra building (PNA offices and ministries) in Gaza City, to obtain a travel permit to Jordan for himself and his son Taha (16), who was severely wounded by Israeli soldiers during the Nakbah incidents on 14/5/1998. For the known "security reasons," the Israelis refused to issue a permit for Taha. Abu Ghali headed to the President's office and asked to see Brigadier-General Ghazi Muhanna. A man named Jazzar al-Ghul, a presidential security official, met with him and heard his complaint. After that, al-Ghul and his guards attacked Abu Ghali, and beat him to death. The victim was taken to al-Shifa'a hospital and no autopsy was performed on the body to know the reasons behind the death. The doctor who saw the body and wrote a death certificate according to the report released by al-'Abbas police headquarters, said that the reasons behind the death were unknown.

The Abu Ghali family told the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group (PHRMG) that the victim died because he was attacked. The family has strong evidence that the victim died as a result of severe beating.

The number of deaths caused by the various security forces is increasing. This points out that the death sentence executed by the PNA against the two Abu Sultan brothers on 30/8/1998, was not effective, because the security forces are still attacking civilians. This situation requires that different measures be taken so as to put an end to all this corruption.

The victim's body did not undergo an autopsy. This points out that PNA officials want to hide all facts and evidence that led to Abu Ghali's death.

The PHRMG condemns this attack that led to the death of Abu Ghali, and asks President Yasser Arafat to personally interfere in this case, and punish those responsible for the death.
