PRESS RELEASES 1998

 Jerusalem: 04 February, 1998

The 19th Death in the Palestinian Prison

Naser al-Hiroob died at 2 am 00 February 3, 1998, at Dora Police Center after he has been severely tortured by the police.

Al-Hiroob (28, married and father of 5, from Deir Samit Village/Hebron) was arrested at 9:00 on February 2, 1998 when he was ordered by two members of the Police Criminal Department to go to the police station for, so they pretended,  only one hour since there would be some issues to discuss.

When Al-Hiroob, as a consequence of the torture, started bleeding from his mouth and ears he was transferred to Dr. Fawzi al-Raj’i in Dora. at 2:15 am on February 3, 1998. Only short time later the doctor announced his death.

Al-Hiroob worked as a gold merchant. Sources close to his family said that he was arrested due to a financial dispute. The same sources assured that he was enjoying a good health and had no links to any of the opposition parties.

Yesterday, in response to the incident, Tareq Zaid, head of the police in Hebron, told journalists that “we have found boat ties surrounding Al-Hiroob’s neck”. In the following, President Arafat announced to establish an investigation committee.

Though an autopsy was made in Al-Hussien in Beit Jala yesterday, no report has been released. Now the family insists on a further autopsy to be made under the supervision of a doctor belonging to the family.

The Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group condemns the use of torture applied routinely to prisoners or suspects and demands on President Arafat and Minister of Justice, Freih Abu Medein to issue new regulations to make sure that the protection of the detainees is guaranteed.

The PHRMG demands furthermore on the High Officials to release both an autopsy- and an investigation-report, and to punish the killers notwithstanding their ranks and make up for an appropriate compensation for the family.
