Sami Ali Mohammed Abd-Rabo: 15th man to die in PA custody

Abd-Rabo died yesterday around 15:00 at Al-Sarayya prison in Gaza. The cause of death was a blood clot in the leg, which apparently is related to a liver illness that Abd-Rabo suffered from before his arrest and imprisonment. The family has said that there were no signs of torture on the body. They have not accused the PA of torturing Abd-Rabo, and there will not be an autopsy.

Abd-Rabo was arrested in February of this year by General Intelligence (Mukhabarat) for collaboration with Israel. He was never officially charged, brought before a court, or tried. Therefore his arrest and detention were illegal

The family told the prison authorities about Abd-Rabo’s illness, and warned that he needed medical attention. Each time the family spoke to the authorities, they were told not to worry since he would be released soon anyway. Abd-Rabo suffered from a liver disease and chronic headaches. He was seen by a doctor in prison, and received medication.

Abd-Rabo was a resident of Jabalya village. He was 41 years old and father of 6 children.

The PHRMG calls for an official investigation into the death of Sami Abd-Rabo. While his death does not appear to be the result of torture or denial of medical treatment, his lengthy illegal detention may have contributed to his illnesses. The PA routinely arrests and detains suspects or political opponents without following legal procedures.
