 Political Arrest....... What for?
Volume 4, Issue 3: The Palestinian Human Rights Monitor

16. Law of the Superior or Superiority of the Law !?

On 12 March 2000 the front page of al-Hayat al-Jadida daily newspaper carried a report about 18 political prisoners from Juneid prison near Nablus whose release President Arafat had ordered on the occasion of the holy festival of Eid al-Adha.

Colonel Abu-Sufian, Head of the Force 17 Security Service in the area of Nablus, said that the Attorney General had given the order to release the 18 political detainees following a noble gesture from President Arafat on the holy occasion of Eid al-Adha. He added that following instructions from the President, all the files of the political prisoners were being studied by the Attorney General Khaled al-Qidra.

Many prisoners’ families expressed their relief. The PHRMG also supports such positive steps, although the High Court has in any event ordered the release of 12 of those 18 prisoners on 12 October 1999.
