15. An open letter to President Arafat

In the name of the Compassionate and Merciful God

We, the children of the Abdel-Majeed Dodeen, the detainee at Jericho prison, address all the people concerned with this matter, asking for an explanation for the negligence in failing to provide our sick father in prison with the required medical treatment. He suffers from a serious illness: his legs and feet are swollen and spots of blood have appeared below his skin.

- In the afternoon of Sunday 24 August 1997, our father demanded to see a doctor because he felt very severe pains. The administration of the prison told him that he had to wait for the following day.

- On Monday 25 August 1997 they told him that the doctor could not come because the pharmacy was closed. They could therefore not give him any medication.

- On Tuesday 26 August 1997 his health deteriorated and so a nurse came to see him. He advised that a doctor should see to him. My father was subsequently surprised that he was brought him medication. He was told that the nurse had recommended it. Our father refused to take the medication.

- On Wednesday 27 August 1997 our father demanded medication because the swelling of his feet had worsened and he could bear the pain no more. He was told to wait until the following day.

- On Thursday 28 August 1997 he was told that the financial department was closed. He asked to see a doctor but was ignored, having no mediaction, until the pharmacy was closed. He finally borrowed some money and gave the athorities 70 shekels to get him the medicine, which they finally did at 9 p.m.

Is not it enough that we suffer every time we travel to visit our father? Why should an old ill man suffer in that way?

The whole family suffers because of his detention. What exactly do they want from us? Do they want him to die? They have deprived us of our source of income. Don’t they know that Israel demolished our house about 18 months ago?

We can only pray to God to stop our agony.

We hope that some officials may feel our suffering and sympathise with our case.
