IV. Violation of
prisoners’ rights guaranteed by International Conventions
Israel has violated many prisoners’
rights enshrined under international law. These violations are not random,
but rather a coordinated policy pursued since the establishment of the
State of Israel. The goal has often been to intentionally harm prisoners,
both physically and mentally. Late Israeli General Moshe Dayan is on the
record as saying: “Prisons will produce cripples and invalids who will be
a burden on Palestinian society.”
Detainees have suffered from the following
violations of their basic rights: torture, solitary confinement and other
forms of inhuman treatment, lack of medical care, malnutrition and bad
quality of food, overpopulated prisons, unsanitary conditions and the
prevention of visits from their families.
