Visits Hebron, Meets with Victims
On Wednesday, 21 November, representatives
from the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group visited victims
of settler violence in Hebron. Among those interviewed were
Mohammed Hamed Abu-Eisheh (71), known as Abu-Zuhair, and Mohammed
Hamed Mahmoud Abu-Eisheh (65). The two are members of the same
family, living in neighboring houses in the old city of Hebron.
Both have been victims of numerous attacks, many of which were
committed by the same group of settlers.
Mr. Abu-Eisheh provided details of four
incidents in which the settlers attacked him and his family. All
of these incidents have been reported to the Israeli police, but
no action has been taken as of this time.
- On 26 July, at 3 a.m., approximately 30
armed Jewish settlers attacked Abu-Eisheh’s home, beating his
son Tayseer (39) and grandson Ashraf (7). Three of the settlers
were identified as Baruch Marzel, Sharon al-Koni, and Benyamin
Bin Yitshak.
- On the afternoon of 14 August, settlers
threw stones at the house, breaking windows. Among those
present was Benyamin Bin Yitshak. The Israeli police arrived
and promised to prosecute the attackers.
- On the evening of 12 September, a group of
young settlers attacked the house with steel bars, breaking the
windows and damaging the door. Among them were Mangi, son of
Baruch Marzel, and the son of Benyamin Bin Yitshak.
- On the afternoon of 21 October, five
settlers approached the house with paper and wood with the
intention of setting fire to the house. The police arrived and
prevented the arson attack, apprehending one of the
perpetrators.
Abu-Zuhair also spoke about several incidents
in which Jewish settlers attacked his family and damaged his
property.
·
On the evening of 18 August, Baruch
Marzel and his family attacked the house, throwing stones in the
door. When the family and neighbors began shouting, the settlers
ran away, but continued to stone the house throughout the night.
·
On 23 September, the same family
attacked the house, breaking windows with stones and destroying
grape vines in front of the house.
All of these incidents have been reported to
the police, but they have taken no action in prosecuting those who
committed these crimes. We have copies of all of the complaints
filed with the police and will be taking strong action to ensure
that these matters are not simply dropped.
